FAQ
1. Where do you get your ideas?
I love to observe the world around me. I get inspiration from children, animals and nature in general, but honestly sometimes ideas just come to me out of nowhere.
2. Where do you write?
I write down ideas as they come to me, but once the book starts to take shape I find a quiet room and put on my favourite music in the background.
3. What is your favourite music?
I love 60's music, classic rock and country music.
4. You often use cats as the main character. Why? Do you have any pets?
I have a deep connection with cats. My books based on cats have been inspired by the stories of cats at a local cat rescue but I feel the themes apply universally. Cats have such unique personalities making them great subjects.
I have had cats and dogs as pets my entire life. I currently am owned by a very handsome but sometimes demanding Maine Coon cat who I love dearly.
5. How old are you?
I am old enough to have 3 tremendous and talented children and 5 equally tremendous and talented grandchildren.
6. Do you write using a computer or pen and paper?
Both. You can have an idea or rhyme pop into you head at any time, and anywhere, so I write it down on whatever is handy. I often email myself ideas or lines so that I don't forget them, but I eventually put it all together on my computer.
7. Why did you start writing children's books?
I began writing about and for my grandchildren. I have always loved reading to them and enjoy their love of books. I wrote about experiences we have shared or hope to share. Most of these books though are just for them and I haven't published them.
From there I started to have ideas about other books and it has progressed from there.
Now I find that I have many different ideas popping into my head.
8. What is your favourite thing about writing for kids?
I love to see the look on children's faces when they read or listen to my books.
9. Do you have any advice for kids who love to write or for those who don't?
Read, read, read all types of books. Draw, draw, draw as well.
Jot down ideas. You don't have to write a full book on your first try or even finish your first book.
If an idea comes to you, write it down immediately.
Don't be afraid of sounding stupid or silly. Some of the best books are goofy and have simple themes!
10. What are some of your favourite children's books?
The Gruffalo
The Wonky Donkey
Rosie Revere, Engineer
The Crunching Munching Caterpillar
Hand, Hand, Finger, Thumb
